On a 2012 & 2013 it's technically possible however it would be incredibly foolish to do it for many reasons including breaking the machine, invalidating the warranty etc. Beginning with the 2012 iMacs the VESA adapters used on prior iMac chasis will NOT work due to the method the chasis are manufactured. If a user wants a 2013 (or 2012) iMac with a VESA connection, Apple makes such a model however buying the parts and attempting to retrofit it would certainly invalidate any warranty. If you want a new iMac with a VESA adapter you have to order the machine configured that way through Apple's CTO site.
If you want to ship an existing iMac the most reliable method has not changed, put it in the original box and packing materials and ship it or check it as luggage and take your chances.
Apple should make the part available at authorized service centers for those who want to convert their 2012 iMacs or even to purchase for those who don't have any reservations about opening their computer up to service it.
You can post your feedback at www.apple.com/feedback
Unfortunately the late 2012 iMacs stands are not detachable like earlier models. The machine must be completely disassembled to remove the stand. I'd recommend shipping it using the original box.
Currently, there is no way to disassemble the stand from the new iMacs.
Sorry.

I am having the same problem would like to wall mount my 2012 imac 27inch any ideas please
Two conflicting replies, MichelPM says it's impossible and rkaufmann87 says it's inconvenient but possible after you dissasemble the iMac. I would like to know which it is, impossible or inconvenient?
If it's possible then why can't we buy a $40 VESA adapter from Apple, dissasemble the computer and install it or if that's not "allowed" why can't a service center do it?
Thank you. I thought as much after looking at a few teardown pictures. There is a company that sells the Mantis 30 VESA Mount. They have an adpater for the 2012 27" iMac that you can order with their arm called "MacHead Large Spigot for NEW 27" iMacs (late 2012)" They have wisely stated that it has to be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Center - obviosly to avoid any potential responsibilty. This solution is ridiculously expensive at over $800.
