problem turning on my icloud mail
I just purchased the new Iphone 5 and Im having problems setting up my icloud account. The error I keep receiving is "There was a problem turning on your email, try again. Can you help me?

If its any consolation I'm having exactly the same problem across iPhone iPad and iMac. Refuses to create icloud.com email address. iPad and iPhone and iPad give same error message as you. iMac goes to create pane then does nothing.
Winston logging onto icloud.com is not a problem but as soon as you try to access either notes or mail tabs it refers you back to the OS to create icloud address - see 1st paragraph.
I have the same problem with my iPhone5 and rMBP. And Winston Churchill: I can't log into my mail account at icloud.com.
BTW my Apple ID is an email address and Apple is telling me I need a different address for the security Questions. Is this causing the problem?
