Best ms office or office compatible app for iPhone and ipad

Pages and Numbers and Keynote have a good deal of compatibility. Some users really like LibreOffice for compatibility, also.

I have both and they work fine with excel and word files for the most part (some things are missing, one simple thing is no strike-through character formatting). Powerpoint is a different matter - ppt/pptx files are alright if not too complicated, but as soon as you start using linked or embeeded objects (spreadsheet tables, bitmap art, metafile figures) they rapidly become useless on just about any tablet (just impossible for a tablet and tablet os to deal with those things). However, just save your complex powerpoints as pdf and you can overcome those display limitations.

For editing and marking up PDFs, there are apps specifically taylored for that - most popular seem to be GoodReader, iAnnotate, PDF Expert, Write PDF - and some others, but I'm only familiar with those four. Each is good, but they all have thier pro's and con's so people who work with pdf's a lot tend to have more than one and use some cloud service for their files (I use Box.net as they just bumped free storage up to 50GB, and it works with all of the apps I've named above - although in truth I think they all also support dropbox, and at least a half dozen others apiece. GoodReader will also just ftp into any server you have an account on).

Actually, no, not many of them do have a free trial or lite version unfortunately. There are lots of free pdf apps though, so be sure to look through the app store at some or try a few - if they meet your needs no point paying for one of the other apps.

If I had to pick one office app, I think it would be QuickOffice Pro, but it is really close between it and Docs to Go as both are very well done apps and work quite well, but I think QuickOffice is now a bit more polished than Docs to Go, at least the iPad HD version.

For PDFs again it is hard to say - you should probably read some of the online reviews as the apps I mentioned have been around awhile, so there are lots of reviews and actual user feedback on many iOS/iApp forums.

I do use GoodReader the most I'd say, but it was also the very first pdf app I bought (I just recently bought iAnnotate since I'd read enough about it to think I should give it a try). Most of these apps have a bit of a learning curve to really take advantage of their features, so be prepared to take a little time with any one of them to really get proficient in using them.

My use for pdfs is mainly in literature I need to read for work (scientific journal articles) and I make my notes directly in the pdf files. However, I am not creating my own pdf files very often at all, just marking up downloaded ones. That may be a factor in your choice as well.

I also do not make notes in pdf - I use two main note apps, Noteshelf and Beesy. For general notes (hand written and/or typed) there are two newish free ones worth looking at - Notes Anytime, and Remarks (by Readdle). Notes anytime at first glance might appear like just a bit of a fun sketching app, but really, it is a very nice notebook app with free hand drawing and writing, plus keyboard input, with folder organization and so forth. I suspect it will not remain free forever.

I would recommend that you check out AstralPad - Its a free Office Collaboration app on the iPad built on Libre Office. But the app is cloud based, so it would require a good internet connection. The app does offer some unique features like real time collaboration with screen sharing and video calling to discuss or present your documents.

Best app for viewing pdf files, both in iPhone & iPad, is the iBooks app.

When opening an attachment of a pdf file I take the option of viewing the pdf file in iBooks.

It's perfect but read only.

I forgot to mention that, for view only of Office Word or Office Excel file, I first save the original file as a pdf and then send it to myself. After opening the file on my iPhone and/or iPad I choose to read it in iBooks.

I use a free iCloud email address for this purpose.

I personnally tried a few supposedly good apps to view Office Powerpoint without great succes.
