I've been in the situation where my MBP easily connects to an open Wi-Fi hotspot while none of my iDevices cannot due to the hotspot's low signal strength. The better Wi-Fi antenna in the MBP allows it to connect much better to marginal signals. In this kind of situation, it would be nice to be able connect the iDevice to the MBP via Bluetooth and use the MBP's Wi-Fi connection.

Did join the wifi network on my iphone but although it says in the menu bar and in general preferences that I'm connected when I open any of my apps on my phone it says there isn't an internet connection. I have wanted to reverse tether before when I've been in a hotel and am only given one username and password to access their wifi so thought this would be a good opportunity to find out how the internet sharing works. Am disappointed that it doesn't work that way. The internet here in Tanzania is sporadic and so am looking for a way to expand my options of how to get internet to all my devices. How would you use the internet sharing then?

Tethering is intended to share the cellular data connection from your phone to your other devices. It can be done via USB, Bluetooth, or WiFi. The phone is designed to always have an Internet connection. If you have a wired internet connection to your laptop, you can share that connection using the WiFi to your iPhone or another WiFi device.
