I have read countless posts on this issue with no resolution.  Brief synopsis:

Using FaceTime on my iPad 3 to video chat with a friend using an iPhone 4S.  Every time I speak, I cannot hear sound from their end.  It takes a couple seconds of me being quiet for sound to resume, but myself and my surroundings have to be completely silent in order for me to hear them.  My friend does not experience this on their end, so it may just be a setting on the iPad.  There is no setting I've found that lets me turn down my mic input to prevent overplay and I have my sound turned down to where I can barely hear them.

Anyone have suggestions on what I can do to fix this?
