My wife recently updated her iPhone 5 and after the update the touchsreen was not working properly.  it would scroll when she was tapping or it would open a different app when touching the phone app, or even scroll when just passing a finger over the phone with ever touching it.  None of this happend prior to the update and my phone has not had any of these issues after the same update. It appears to be an isolated but frustrating case.

Any ideas on what the issue is and how to solve?

Has the phone been turned off since doing the update?  If so, you can try doing a hard reset by holding the home and sleep/wake button at the same time until you see an Apple logo.  This will often reset issues like this.  Lastly, you can backup to iTunes or iCloud and then restore the phone as new.  Test the phone and if the problem has gone away, restore from your backup to get your data back.  Hope this helps.

Excellent idea.  My wife tried that several times (as did I) to see if that solved the problem.  Obviously, multiple hard resets are not generally a good plan; however, after each time, the problem seemed to resolve itself. Unfortunately, it keeps coming back...it is like there is a bug in the screen interface or some counter gets overloaded... hence why hard resets or cyling the phone through the sleep stage seems to help temporarily...

I also thought it might be a really dirty screen, so I cleaned it...still the problem came back.

I guess I'm going to have to go the backup and restore route... or take advantage of the Apple Care warranty and make apple come up with a better solution!!!

Hi !! Apparently I have the same problem. Did you find the solution?

  • TWGoodwin3 Level 1 Level 1

Honestly, I have been holding off on the new resotre route as my wife says the problem comes and goes now. When it starts, she puts the phone to sleep and then brings it back up to mitigate the problem.  Clearly not an ideal solution when one has to do that several times a day; however, I'm hoping someone at Apple will monitor the discussion (HINT, HINT) and provide a better solution than "start from beginning,"

I am wondering if the problem happens predominately in one portion of the screen?  My wife is convinced it is a screen issue toward the lower third middle.

    Zabul,

Thank you for replying. My hope is that enough people will comment and we can get software engineer help from Apple.

I am having the same problem.  I have tried everything and nothing seems to fix this.  I am about to throw this phone off a tall building.  Someone needs to help from Apple.

Update to everyone following this discussion. I asked my wife this morning if she was still having the problem.  She says that it appears to be lessening.  (FYI - I haven't done the new restore yet).

I'm not sure why it is lessening to the point of going away unless repeated sleep cyling is solving the problem...

    Zabul,

Interesting that you brought up the returning issue.  My wife was complaining about that this past evening.  I am still looking for more people with #iPhone5jumpyscreen issues

Why do we have to look for people with same problem? is this the "Apple Support Communities"??

    Is Apple ignoring the problem?

Why Apple does not push an updated version?

I have the same problem.  I guess I'll have to pay Square Trade $50 for my warranty to replace the phone, again.

But I'm tired of having to reset my phone every day to fix it temporarily.

    DeborahD,

You are having to to a hard reset everyday?  My wife's phone has settled down but occasionally it will start jumping on her.  Her solution is to close the phone (rather than a hard reset). Then go back in; usually after she puts in her passcode, the problem disappears.

Admittedly, this is not a solution but a repetative band-aid.  Unfortunately, the Apple Support Community monitors do see this as important - probably due to a few number of complaints.  If you know of anyone else having this issue, please have them chime in on this discussion...hopefully more people will create enough noise for attention.
