My MacBook Pro 17", running OS X 10.7.5, is suddenly requiring a password when I ask to move a file to the trash. Once entered, the file disappears from Finder, yet the trash stays empty and free space on my internal hard drive does not increase.

My MacBook Pro 17", running OS X 10.7.5, is suddenly requiring a password when I ask to move a file to the trash. This is worse than annoying: Once I enter my administrator's password, the file I'm attempting to move to the trash disappears from Finder, never to be seen again; yet the trash stays empty and free space on my internal hard drive does not increase.

This is a terrible problem, since I have loads of large .mov files I need to delete. But when I try, it's as though my hard drive can never be emptied again. Please help!

Making matters even worse, attempting to restart my computer, with zero applications open, yields a message telling me that restart aborted due to processes running.
