Hi,
When i boot up my macbook, i find myself sitting at a blank white screen for a long period of time. eventually the screen turns to a grey background and OSX utilities opens up.
Can anybody explain why this is happening and offer any solutions on how i can get my macbook back to normal?

Open Disk Utility and verify disk. Press Command and R keys on boot, open Disk Utility and repair it if the Disk Utility shows a problem
Also, open the System Preferences and click on Startup Disk. Select your main drive and restart. This forces the OS to write which disk is supposed to be the startup drive to the PRAM.
Did you fit the new drive internally and did you boot into recovery?
Go to Disk Utility and verify that the format is MAC OS Extended (Journaled), if it is not change it while you are in the utility.
Then choose reinstall OSX
Ok, everything's up and running. Now how do I get all my old stuff back?
Connect your old drive or backup drive externally and bring it back.
When I click on the files in my external hard drive, none of the files appear despite that they do exist?
Pick one, copy it to the new drive, try to open it (pick a txt file)
Have you reinstalled applications to open these files yet?
im having further problems now. The External hard drive does not appear anymore in finder, however it appears in disk utilities.
Take a screenshot of the first aid page in Disk Utilities, make sure to select the old drive.
Now do the same thing but choose the partition itself (Macintosh HD on the external)
I'm sorry but you may not get your data back, what happens if you try to mount the partition (using the mount button on the toolbar, it's gray it probably won't work)
So there is nothing I can do? :(

No way for me to answer that, it may or may not.
If you can't mount the drive there is little you can do, recovery software may or may not work, a Recovery Service may be better, but will be expensve (thousands rather than hundreds)
