Hi,
When i boot up my macbook, i find myself sitting at a blank white screen for a long period of time. eventually the screen turns to a grey background and OSX utilities opens up.
Can anybody explain why this is happening and offer any solutions on how i can get my macbook back to normal?

Open Disk Utility and verify disk. Press Command and R keys on boot, open Disk Utility and repair it if the Disk Utility shows a problem
Also, open the System Preferences and click on Startup Disk. Select your main drive and restart. This forces the OS to write which disk is supposed to be the startup drive to the PRAM.
It might also be worth mentioning that I hear several beeps on bootup
Could you explain how to 'very disk's'?
3 beeps?
Bad Ram uses 3 beeps as a warning.
there is a button in the bottom right corner of the utility that you need to push and let the system do the rest.
I foegot to mention that while in the utility you must first click on the main Macintosh HD drive so that it's the drive you're looking to repair. Once you do this then the "verify disk" will show in the bottom right.

1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

Ok, i did as you said however i recieved " the volume macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired".
I stopped the verification and clicked repair 'disk'.
Am I doung the right thing?
you're doing the right thing but you should not stop the verification beacuse it may find more issues. Let it fix whatever's running now and verify again to see what else it finds.
Ok, im recieving a long list of 'invalid node structure' and 'invalid record count' .
Is this process likely to lose any data on my macbook?
No, you should not lose any data but that truly all depends on what the system has to do to fix the issues. Again, i think it's unlikely that you will lose anything. Hopefully it can fix everything in one swoop.
This process is taking a while, the estimated time till completion has not changed since the repair started.

Yes, don't interrupt the repair.
Do you have a backup in case this fails?
Let the repair un as it can sometimes run long. Do not interrupt it.
