Battery won't charge after long period of non-use

My Macbook Pro 13" (early 2011) was put away for about 6 months. When I opened it up now, the battery is dead, and won't charge. It will run on
AC as long as I have it plugged in but the menu shows that it's not charging and the light on the magsafe adapter shows green. I've left it plugged in for a few hours, but it's still dead with no charge when I return.

Should the battery always be kept with a charge? Is this battery a goner?

Thanks in advance.

If you want to keep the battery charged when not in use, yes.

Is this battery a goner?

Probably.

To check for a bad battery, go to Apple/About This Mac/More Info

In the System Profiler window, select the Power entry & look for Health Information.

If next to Condition it says "Check Battery" then your battery is probably on the fritz.
