    If its a .dmg you should be able to install it to *another* location other than the Application Folder, which has AU 6.2 installed already and you cannot remove that.  On my ML, AU 5.6.1 is installed at the desktop.

    The DMG contains the PKG. Both can be installed in the same place.

    OP - Open up the DMG, move the PKG to your desktop and open it with Pacifist or unpkg as shown in the Macworld article.

    Thanks guys for hanging in there with me.  I created a separate folder on my desktop called AirPort Extreme and I opened the .dmg inside Pacifist and extracted the .pkg to that new folder.  I was able to open and run the AirPort Utility 5.6 from there which allowed me to finally update the firmware and configure the router.  The only question I have left is do I need to keep that folder on my desktop or can it be moved or deleted?

    AirPort Utility 5.6 can be moved to /Applications where it can coexist with version 6.
