java plug in failure

I cannot get the Java plug in on a particular web page to work when I try to load the page on my oldest Mac (2008), even though the plug in works on my other two newer Macs.

I have updated the OS, uninstalled and reinstalled the latest versions of Flash and Java. I'm out of ideas.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Hi Jen,

Just one page? Does Java work on other sites?

Locate the version of Java that’s installed on your Mac OS X system.

1. Open the Utilities folder and run the Terminal application.

2. Type java -version and press Enter.

(space between java & -v important)

The version of Java that you have installed will then be displayed on the screen.

Could it be this?

Note that the title of that document has been changed since the last release to "Java for OS X 2013-001: How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 web applet plug-in and Web Start functionality". As far as I know the instructions are still the same.
