Remote Disc randomly appeared in Finder and cannot be removed...

Where in Finder is it showing up, if you can post a screen shot (Shift - Command - 4) that would be helpful.

I suspect you turned on Sharing, try Sharing - and see what boxes are checked. Also, I edited my first post, please look at the link I added.

So is this the only system on your network? Also what model iMac?

So no DVD drive right? (That's why you don;t have the sharing option in system prefs) That remote disk icon represents the DVD drive on another computer not yours. Its a way to share a DVD drive to systems with no DVDs.

When it happens you can try shutting down the other equipment you have to see if it affects it any. Not sure if there is a way to query the icon to see who is providing the disk. You might want to search to see if there is a way.

As all my systems here have DVDs Even if I turn that option I don;t see the remote disk so I can;t poke around.

You could try clicking on it to see what shows up, might give you a clue as to where it is coming from. But it looks like your Mac thinks something out there is serving a DVD player.

If nothing else helps you can always try a re-install of the OS.

Your new to the Mac OS, so I'm going to give you a word of advice. Don't waste time resinstalling the OS. That's a Windows thing, not a Mac thing. We rarely, and when I say rarely, I really mean never, reinstall the OS unless we're selling the Mac, or we've purchased and installed a new hard drive (and even then, that's not the way to do it). You will hardly ever see a recommendation from one of the long-time experts on here to reinstall OSX. I've been using OSX since nearly the day it was introduced, on dozens of Macs, and I have not once reinstalled OSX, except for the two reasons I mentioned. Please don't waste your time doing that.

Don't worry about the remote disc, it is not a problem. It will only have something on it if there is another computer on your network. BTW, a Playstation3 on my networks makes that show up on my iMac whenever the PS3 is turned on.

In Safe Mode the system is brought up in a minimal state, no external disks are mounted for example. This explains why it doens;t show up in safe mode. It would be more interesting if it did!

As you did an OS re-install there is no benifit to going through that again, I am surprised it took you so long. Normally with aa decent internet connection an OS install should take an hour or so tops. Did you have problems?

Another thing to try, when the remote disk is in Finder select it and do a Get Info. Perhaps the Info window will give you some information.

And I would still suggest that when the sysetm is up and the remte disk appears try to take all your other internet connected items off the network. See if anything changes.

OK after digging around this AM I believe that what you are seeing on new non-DVD equipped Macs is the correct behavior.

As I said on my systems (all with DVD drives) I didn;t see the Remote Disk icon in Finder even if I was sharing a DVD drive from one system. This is because the ability to see remote DVD drives is turned off in the OS by default on my systems. If I turn it on I see the Remote disk icon even if no other system is sharing its DVD.

So in your case because you are on a new Mac with no DVD that capability is turned on by default. While it would be possible to turn it off there is nothing to be gained by doing so.
