fuzzy display when turning computer on and freezes

Does any one know why my computer won't start first time? When I switch it on the apple display comes on, then fuzzy lines running across the full screen appear, makes a strange noise sometimes, then screen freezes. Have to turn it on and off 3 or 4 times before it works. Any solutions?

imac G5, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I would take that to the local service centre. Strange noises and lines running across the screen is something more than user serviceable on the new iMac.

If you are running Panther OS rather than Tiger, you do not have an iMac Intel, but a first generation iMac G5, and your problem and the solution is explained here:

I had the exact same problem...

push the power button in and hold it to turn off the iMac.
push it again to turn it back on
hear the chime
push and hold the Command-Option-P-R key combination during startup untill you hear the chime again

this fixed my problem...for the most part, only went blurry-fuzzy once more...

iMac kernel[0]: Graphics chip error! Restarted.

nope...problem still here, option-command-P-R didn't fix it. Got a case number from Apple Support, gonna take the iMac in to be fixed under the http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/ .
