Core i7 15" MacBook Pro not rebooting or shutting down

Hi All,

My MacBook Pro will not shut down or reboot properly - it sits at the gray screen with the spinning circle.

I have tried resetting the SMC but to no avail and I have to turn off by holding down the power switch.

This has just become more of an issue as I want to install the new SMC firmware update but can't as the machine won't reboot after the update is unpacked and hard rebooting via the power switch cancels the update.

I am running OSX 10.8.2. Any ideas?

You may have directory issues. Shut down. Then boot while holding down the command-r keys until it boots to the ML recovery disk. Select Disk Utility and then run Repair Disk.

Shut down by holding down the power button until it shuts down.

Yes it shuts down but when booting back up (and after logging in) the OS complains that it was not shut down properly and asks if I want to repoen everything.

Sorry, I did reply further up (my first reply to you) in that yes, I used the recovery tools and ran Rapair Disk but the problelem is still there.

You may have a hard drive issue. Back up and anticipate a new hard drive.
