Your feature requests for next version?

I have submitted mine on the feedback page, but I would love to know what you all want the next version to include in terms of improvements and additional features.

In short, my prefered additions would include:

-Stack/collapse all in one keystroke
-More adjustments (among them lens distortion and CA correction)
-Speeeed
-Panorama stitching
-Networking, being able to share images

Do you mean only having to press one key instead of a key combination? (If you just mean a keyboard shortcut for stacking unstacking there already are) Not gonna happen. I think they've used up all the single keys for things already, and one keyboard shortcuts are set, I can't imagine they'd change. You can't go changing shortcuts between each version.

Lens distortion would be nice, also something for me like Image>Transform>Distort in PS would be nice. I mostly take pictures of artwork and its nice to square up some rectangular pieces a bit if I didn't align the camera correctly. I don't see this happening though, because thats beginning to get into the PS area and manipulation the image too much. Aperture is more about finding the good shots in your shoots and pulling out the best ones and tweaking them so they look their best. Truth is I should probably spend a little more time squaring up, but time doesn't always permit. I guess thats why I have PSE as a crutch in case.

Speed would be nice, hopefully there's more of that to come in this 1.x, but there should hopefully be moreso in 2.x.

I think Panorama is as likely as the distort feature. It could happen, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Something I would like is a High Dynamic Range ability.

I'm sure I've got more, but its time to go home.

I was cruising along loving Aperture and my Nikon D70s when I bought a Fuji S3 Pro and wham! Aperture doesn't recognize Fuji RAW.
wuzzupwidat?
Now I'm back in Bridge and PShop CS2 and missing Aperture.
How do I work around this without converting to jpegs? Can I import Adobe DNG into Aperture without any compression loss? (I just thought of that.
This is an immediate problem as I've got a backlog of 4 projects, over 1,000 photos.
Can't Aperture and Fuji just learn to get along? Share the logarithms, baby!

May 16, 2006 4:06 PM in response to Curtis McCosco

Nope, DNG isn't the answer, because Aperture doesn't support DNG file from cameras it doesn't already support as RAW.

I think it's a problem with both Adobe and Apple, but the more I learn about it seems that DNG is not all it claims to be. It just seems to be a unified wrapper for the same ol' RAW file. Their claim is that converting to DNG will allow applications that support DNG to support that file, but what we see with Aperture is that thats just not true. I fault Adobe with misrepresenting what DNG is, but I also fault Apple for advertising support for DNG, which essentially is useless in this case because if Apple supports the RAW file as is, you wouldn't need to convert to DNG (except for archiving and the fact that one DNG can't be opened just as easily as another DNG in a third party application throws the whole idea of DNG for long term support out the window.).

So poo on both of em!

This is why when I decided to upgrade my camera I went with something with broader support. I liked my fuji a lot, but I think their Super CCD with different sized receptors and diagonal grids are probably one of the biggest roadblocks to them being supported. That and them not being forthcoming with third parties about how to convert their RAW format.

Poo on Fuji too.

Finer-grained AppleScript support
Plug-in SDK
Strokes and drop shadows for the book layouts.

More to come...

All three of Ian's comments are on the right track; moving to make Aperture an open launching pad for other creative companies besides Apple to incorporate their best ideas--implement their unique skills. When Apple releases a better Applescript implementation and a SDK for image adjust plugins and a SDK for print & book ordering services then they will immediatly multiply the number of programers working on their product many times over--for free.

The audio guys have had open plug-in standards for years, why can't photographers?

Why should Apple give up a portion of their revenue stream that comes from books and print orders? Because Adobe will! I believe this was always a part of the plan for Bridge--which hasn't quite taken off in that area. I am certain that Adobe will try again with Lightroom, they will have to open up to compete with Aperture.

I would rant on but I also am willing to bet that the smart $$$ guys at Apple already know this and it's on the Aperture future revision roadmap. Aperture's interface is designed and waiting for image adjust plugins. I just hope we don't have to wait till v3. Sooner is better.

I like and use Aperture a lot, but realistically is still a v1 program. So I am looking forward to v2. Here's my wish list ....

1. Plug In suppport - Nik plug-in's etc.

2. iLife suite integration without duplicating photos or relying on Automator

3. Integration to FCP suite ..... since the photos are in a package!

4. Ability to use Spotlight external to the package ... or get rid of the package and just move to either file/folder structure or go to an indexed "RDBMS" database (yes, holy wars on this one, I know)

5. Burn archive of import, as a workflow element.
Multiple aperture libraries selectable from the File dialog vs. preference and then quit/launch

6. Span aperure library across drives

7 Standard max/min/lozenge buttons on windows and fonts that an over 50 year old can read .... or adjust .... on today's 23" or 30" high res. displays.

8. oh, and did somebody say .....
S-P-E-E-D?
speed
SPEEEED

9. ....but at least give us progress bars when say, moving photos from project to project

10. Undo on deleting a project .... you're into re-importing from the Mac trash can after figuring out which photo you need (yup, I have the scars and wasted time award)

11. Better visual representation of what's happening (or not) when trying to move photos across albums etc.
Either give us full line camera RAW support, or DNG linear support, or a plug in capability.

12. Overlay one photo on another in book view (tools to increase transparency/reduce saturation on the background photo to create a sense/theme)

12. CURVES!! User uploaded file tool

13. Loupe tool that will stay over the photo while I use the mouse to alter tool settings

14. .... and Luddite that I am, I do still need a <Cmd>+ / <Cmd> - zoom function along with the loupe.

Here endeth today's list. And my thanks to Joe and the Aperture development team in advance!

scalable text in the main window. i get fed up with trying to line up the mouse on tiny buttons such as the close button on preferences. so standard size text and buttons or user scalable. also it would be good if you could name a folder with a unique number that acts as your job number and aperture would let you know if you have already used that number in another folder so you don't replicate it. my job numbers are all over the place. HDR support would be good too.

My 2 cents worth.

1. Partner with nik for Sharpener Pro and Color Efex Pro plug ins
2. Partner with AsukaBook for really high quality books.
3. Let us customize the adjustments pallet. Keep sharpening always in the pallet, for instance, if we want to.
4. HSL tone adjustments like LightRoom instead of the color levels adjustment.
5. A true duo-tone adjustment instead of the "color B&W" adjustment
6. Saveable adjustment presets.

May 17, 2006 8:28 AM in response to Kjell Refsvik

1. Eliminate the proprietary library system, allow pros to control their files (this trumps ALL other requests from me, it's a showstopper for every pro I know.)
2. Sticky UI elements so I don't need to reset all of my panels for every image
3. WB Presets
4. Metadata presets
5. Write metadata and filename changes to master files
6. Allow me to specify page dimensions in book tool
7. Borders, shadows, masks for book tool
8. Ability to make themes for book tool
9. Rotatable crop box
10. Editable keyboard shortcuts
11. Allow me to open my raw files in external editors
12. Let me put my thumbnails on my second monitor
13. Support DNG
14. Support Fuji S2/S3 RAF
15. Offline Cataloging
16. A sensible backup/archiving system - the vault is useless for me.

Large, clear progress bars.

Since we process batches of images, all kinds of things in Aperture take time. Importing of course, but many other things as well. Moving to the next workflow step before a previous step is complete can cause problems and/or confusion. It is very frustrating constantly not knowing whether or not one is waiting on Aperture to complete a task.

Every activity that takes more than 4 seconds should pop up a very visible progress bar.
