From thunderbolt to hdmi, from hdmi to VGA

Hi I have a macbook Pro with thunderbolt adapter to hdmi. Can I connect to it an hdmi to vga adapter and use a second VGA monitor for my macbook??

You could, but why not use a VGA adapter directly from the Thunderbolt port?

Because in the place where I live it's easier to buy an adapter from hdmi to vga than the Apple one... and maybe it costs less... However I will report my experience here after my attempt. Thanks
