how can i update my ipod touch 3rd generation? i have already went onto the settings on my ipod and went onto general and there is nothing there about software updates, but when i try to download apps, it says 'This app requires iOS 4.3.'

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
