I am unable to merge two events in iPhoto 9.4.2. When I select two events to merge and then go to the Event menu there is no "merge" option, not even a greyed out one. When I try to drag one event on top of the other I can't. Help menu says either of those approaches would work. I see similar questions to this on the Discussion Forum, but none seem to resolved.
Can you use the other method? Flag the photos in one Event and then select the target Event and go Events -> Add Flagged Photos to Selected Event
Nope. Doesn't work. "add flagged photos to selected event" is greyed out. Also I cannot select photos and create a new event.
Can you view the photos in these events at full size?
Give this basic troubleshooting fix a try:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

thanks the suggestions. I deleted the files as recommended. HOWEVER - it didn't fix the problem. I cannot merge events by any means or create a new event from selected photos in an existing event.
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

Thanks. That seemed to do the trick. But now my Events list in the Source window is in random order. I can sort the events in the pane with the pictures. And I can sort the order of the Albums. But I cannot seem to sort the list of Events in the Source list. Ideas?
view menu ==> sort events

that changes the order of the thumbnail views of the events in the "main" window. Doesn't change the order of the events in the source bar/pane on the left hand side.
Sorry - I never view events there (too many) - the only sort available there is manual or alpha (which can not be undone) - to sort Alpha show the events in the source pane and rignt click - select sort albums and you will have an ALpha list (which I find of little use myself) - you can use the iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback to request more sort options

Have you tried this? Control(right)-click on one of the album and select Sort Albums
right. was able to make this work for albums, but not events. Now seems to be working for events, too.
didn't work as it was supposed to the first time, but now does.

Have you rebooted since this problem began? That's one of the first things to try in the future as it will clear some cashes and will often clear up things like this.
