Q: need SD 30fps to HD 24fps conversion

Hi

 

Here is my sequence settings...

 

frame size: 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9)

pixel aspect ratio: square

framerate: 23.98

compressor: prores 422

 

The majority of the footage is HD, but I do have a few clips that are...

 

DVCPRO NTSC, 720x480, 29.97

 

Naturally when I play these in my 23.98 sequence the footage is choppy. I'm looking to convert these files from 29.97 to 23.98. I've used Twixtor in the past but am looking for something a bit more user friendly. I'm also looking for a filter or program to up res my SD footage to HD. Can anyone help me out?

    I'd suggest using compressor.  Customize the appropriate prores preset.  In the encoder panel, video settings - change the frame rate to 23.976.  In the Frame Controls panel, enable frame controls, change the resize filter to best, make the output progressive and deinterlace to best and set the duration to 100% of source. 

     

    I'm assuming your DVCPro material is 4:3.  Do you want to crop it or add black to the left and right to fill the 16:9 frame (also known as pillarbox).

     

    In the geometry paenl, set the dimension to 1920x1280 with square pixels and either set the crop appropriately or add the appropriate padding.

     

    I'd suggest you do a test of a short section by setting an in and out in the preview window.

     

    Oh by the way, 24 fps is not the same as 24p (23.976 fps).  Film is actually usually shot at exactly 24 frames per second.

    I think the black magic is a bit out of my price range but I'll give compressor and twixtor another go at it. Thanks for the help.
