apple id does not work with iCloud

I have a new MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.2 and I can sign ito iTunes (I do not see my library of purchases??) but I can not sign into iCloud. I do not know what the problems is. I also have a personal MacBook Pro but I do understand I can not use iCloud with it unless I upgrade my OS which is unlikely to happen because I have read it can really slow it down. Here is the message I get:

This Apple ID’s email address cannot be verified. Change your Apple ID’s email address at appleid.apple.com to sign in to iCloud.

This Mobileme/Apple ID /iTune issue made me migrate to Google Drive in the first place.

Any help would be appreciated.
