Feb 23, 2013 2:54 PM in response to wheadlemanby Kappy,About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

Thanks to the $15 Beamer, AirPlay streaming is still possible on Macs that do not support Airplay and mirroring.
Another solution is the Air Parrot.

Feb 23, 2013 2:54 PM in response to wheadlemanby SwankPeRFection,You must have the latest iOS version (well at least a certain version anyway, but might as well upgrade to the latest) on the AppleTV and have Mountain Lion on your MBP and the MBP must be of a certain year version.
Here's the requirements doc on it. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

Feb 23, 2013 2:59 PM in response to SwankPeRFectionby wheadleman,Everything is up to date. I followed those directions, and it does not work. My Macbook is only a couple weeks old, and the AppleTV is 2nd generation, so I am confused as to what else I need to do. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Feb 23, 2013 3:26 PM in response to SwankPeRFectionby wheadleman,Netgear N600, WNDR3400v2. Yes, I did read the troubleshooting article. I have full strength wireless on both devices. They are also on the same channel. If I wait a while, a screen shot of my computer shows up on the TV, but it never changes. Then, it goes back to AppleTV itself. I might have to just redo the wireless. I am surprised the music will go to AppleTV without any problems, but the mirroring does not work. Is the mirroring suppose to work flawlessly without any interruptions? I just want to be sure I am trying to fix something worth fixing.
Thanks again for the help.

Feb 23, 2013 4:31 PM in response to wheadlemanby SwankPeRFection,As long as that Netgear is on the latest firmware, it should work. I've honestly never run into multicast protocol issues with Netgear routers in a long time. Try maybe updating the firmware on that, make sure UPnP (Universal PnP) is turned on on the router and all else fails, just restore to factory and reconfigure it. While you're at it, might as well make sure you're on WPA2/AES security for it. (You're doing all the legwork to reconfigure it anyway, might as well bump up the security the current standards while you're at it.) Also, make sure both your laptop and AppleTV have good signal and speed on the WIFI network. A weak signal could have issues with the mirror function since it's a bit more intensive than pure streaming is.
BTW, as long as your MacBook displays the AirPlay mirroring icon on the Finder menu bar, it is properly seeing that device as available for the necessary protocols. If that works, but the mirror portion doesn't, that points more to a possible network speed issue, but taking care of the above listed things will get you started with a nice clean stable base to work from.
