.... and have lost all content that was previously only on my iPod, i.e. was not on my PC. Is there any way to restore this lost content?

I tried the Restore from Backup option, and it didn't seem to help btw
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
For other media you have to get them from where you obtained them originally.
Note the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music
I have synced my iPod touch with iTunes on my PC...
