There is no Macintosh hd volume for me to click on when choosing a disk for is install. Why not?

I am trying to deal with the flashing question mark.

iMac (24-inch Mid 2007), iOS 4.1

Because the disk's directory structure is damaged, in which case you need to use the Disk Utility to repair or erase it, or the drive is physically unplugged or dead.
