Consider:
Taking your mac in to a repair place to see if the trackpad is broken (or the battery is swollen).
The possibility of a third party software conflict: Does this still happen for a different user, e.g., Guest user? Does this still happen after Starting up in Safe Mode?
Thanks CT, but when I switched users, I lost complete use of the touchpad. once I figured out the keyboard shortcuts for restarting in safe mode I was able to swithch back from guest user. Although the touch pad now works, I still cannot click and drag.
What would cause the battery to swell?
Old or defective batteries have been known to swell and interfere with the trackpad. I forgot to ask: What happens if you plug a regular old mouse in?
