I'm using a movie trailer template in iMovie. I want to add still photos with transitions to the end of it with different music. Should I create a slideshow in Keynote then import it into iMovie? Or can I add the photos/music directly into iMovie?

You can add directly in iMovie.
You will first have to convert your trailer to a regular project.
Go to the Project Library view so you see all you projects. Select your trailer, and click FILE/CONVERT TO PROJECT. Then you can edit it like any iMovie Project.
