Q: iMac has set up new user after migrating files from old PC and I cant login to that new user, what do I do?

As thread title.  Brand new to the world of Mac and wishing I had stayed with Windows already.

It seems I need a password to have a p**s as far as Mac's are concerned.

OK, so wanted to migrate all my music from my partners old desktop PC onto the iMac and then put it into iTunes.  Migration Assistant worked wonderfully and 3 hours later, I return to the Mac to sort out iTunes.  First problem is that I cant find the music files.  There's about 48Gb, so not easy to hide.  I eventually discover that a new user has been set up by the iMac in the name of the PC that the mp3's migrated from.

I cannot log in to this new user!  Even with Administrator rights, using my Apple ID and resetting the new user password, I cannot log in to this new user account and retrieve the music!! Crazy, but there you go. Apparently I'm meant to go into Keychain and sort it out, unfortunately, Keychain is only looking at my details and not revealing the new user.  To be honets, I couldnt tell you how Im meant to change anything in Keychain, even after pouring through the hideously written Help guff that comes with it.

If this machine had not cost me so much money, I'd be hurling it out of the window at this point. It's Sunday evening, I would like to listen to my music and so if anyone can shed any help, light or hammer, then I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Thank you

iMac, iOS 6.1.2

You typed you migrated from your old partners PC - try using their password. It sounds like you've done what is in these articles, but maybe there will be something new.

    Reset Password

    Reset Password using Apple ID

If you can see the other computer in Finder, try drag and drop copying the files. Can you copy the files to a Flash drive or external hard drive and then download them?

Remove the new account completely, login to the old account and DO NOT use migration assistant to move the music. MA is for moving accounts and the things they contain. If you just want to move files there are simpler and faster methods.

If you want to use MA then read the instructions, all of this is covered therein.

    Thanks Eric

Ive tried all ways! In fact the first password I tried was the Windows password for her old PC.

I've since tried to reset the password, using my apple ID and any other way I can logically think of.  As a new Mac user, I'm finding the different terminology very difficult to understand.

I'm just aqbout to f=go into Time Machine and rewind the clock back to before migrating the mp3 files as I'm worried that if I start messing about with stuff in Keychain, or whatever its called, I'll end up locking myself out as I dont know what to change and for whom and where....

I posted some more suggestions about the time you posted. If you can follow Csound1's suggestion, you wouldn't have to restore, although that is an option.

I have no idea why you are now involving Time Machine, are you trying to make this complicated?

    1. Delete the new (unwanted) account and login to your existing user account.

    2. Copy the iTunes folder (from the PC) to a thumb drive or an external drive.

    3. Paste it into the same location on your Mac.

    4. Listen to the music.

    Thanks Csound1

Dont think I'm trying to make it complicated!  Clearly I am though!

Unwanted user being deleted as I type, I guess it will take a while as the music is associated with that user.

I did try the copy mp3 files onto external drive with the classic copy n paste before attempting MA.  I couldn't find the external drive on Finder, so thought MA was the way to go.  I'll try again.  The mp3's are not in iTunes at the mo, was using WMP on PC.

You will need an external drive Formatted as Fat32 so that both the PC and the Mac can use it, NTFS and HFS are one trick ponys.

NTFS is the Windows file system, HFS is the Mac file system, Fat32 is a file system they both understand.

Format your external drive as FAT32.

I sympathize but please remember that you got here by choosing the wrong tool for the job, trying to move music you moved the entire account instead. Now you're in recovery mode. I am trying to keep it as simple as possible.

For which I very much appreciate the simplicity!

The very helpful people at the Apple shop recommended MA when I asked about the best way to move my music.  Their response was:

Convert on your old PC to preferred format

    Keep them out of iTunes

Download MA for Windows onto PC

Connect Mac and PC with Ethernet cable

Select Music folder and click continue a few times...

I gave them such glowing feedback afterwards too!

Dreadful advice, next time get a 2nd opinion

Do you know what to do or can we help some more (and confirm for me that it is the iTunes Library that you wish to move from the PC to the Mac please)
