SMC Firmware Clamps Processor Speed?

Just installed the SMC firmware update.
Cooler: Running CoreDuoTemp v0.51, I couldn't push the temp past 70, whereas I reached mid 80's before.
But SLOWER: I can't (according to the CoreDuoTemp program) push it past 1000Mhz, the chip's minimum. It used to idle at 1500, and push to 1830. To boot, things like iTunes visualizer are noticeably slower.

So...well, this would obviously explain the heat difference. It's nice having a cooler operating temp, but are we really capped at 1.0 Ghz to get it? Can anyone else confirm?

BTW, is there any other program that will give a readout of current clock speed?

I will agree with you on that point Phil however, I noticed that if the fan did not activate, the tempurture of the core cooled at a much slower pace than with the fan on. This is what I meant by my statement on the thermal design of the MacBook Pro which is indeed a characteristic of the outward case design on some levels. Sorry if I was too vague.

I'm hoping someone has a quick fix related to the recent firmware update problem. I just updated my MBP (has functional Windows XP partition, from which I'm sending this message...)with the new firmware and the computer boots into the Mac OS but then freezes. Used Disk Utility to repair disk, verify permissions, from the CD but problem persists. Thanks for your help, and patience.

Well I feel lucky... My MacBookPro is from 04/21/2006 and is a 2.16ghz with 2gb RAM.

I have NOT installed the SMC update and while I write this I have had two "yes > /dev/null" terminals going maxing out both cores.

Initially Hardware Monitor reported my temp getting up to 84 deg. The fans came on and cooled it and it stayed there. Now almost 3 minutes later I'm at 77C with fluxuations to 81 and both cors are at 100% and have been for a while. Fans have slowed noticably indicating to me that it is taking care of business.

I guess I got a golden one. I have NOT opened the case and done the thermal goo thing either for fear of causing more problems.

I installed the update this morning and I've noticed a temperature decrease of about 4-7 degrees C, and CoreDuoTemp is reporting roughly the same clock speeds that I've seen for the past few days that I've been using it. Right now, I'm ripping a DVD in HandBrake and I've got 95-100% CPU usage at 2167Mhz and 73-75 degrees C.

I feel lucky to say that after installing the SMC update, my MBP 1.83 runs at normal clock speeds (1500MHz - 1300MHz when idle) and is a little cooler to the touch when running. I also noticed that the machine boots up faster, I don't know if this was just my imagination, but I seemed to get to the login screen much faster. Mine is an early MBP, and this seems to have eased my heat issues a bit, although I will have to see how this lasts over the next few days.

Just my thoughts.
