Feb 24, 2013 4:17 PM in response to AuntieTby b noir,Doublechecking, Auntie. What's the second sentence of your particular error message? (Precise text, please.)

Feb 25, 2013 2:42 PM in response to b noirby AuntieT,Hi,
Sorry for the delay in responding. The exact message I receive is:
"There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor"
As I stated in my first post, I followed the advice from the Apple support pages to remove all Apple programs in a specific order and then re-install. This did not work. Am now at my wits end as the last version of iTunes worked without any problems.
Any advice would be gratefully received

Doublechecking ... Based on the title of your topic, I guess you've seen this, but have you tried the following user tip?

Feb 25, 2013 2:53 PM in response to b noirby AuntieT,Hi, yes I did see the tip you refer to above, but after I removed all the Apple programs on my PC, I have been unable to re-install Apple Software Update. I am not even able to install Quicktime on it's own. All very frustrating to say the least!!

Feb 25, 2013 2:59 PM in response to AuntieTby b noir,★HelpfulJust in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.)

Feb 25, 2013 3:28 PM in response to AuntieTby ziax13,hi auntieT,
just to make a suggestion certain times when downloading from the internet you can have specific temp internet files that also appear those files can cause issues with redownloading any program though not just specific programs.
try using this article from the support site it gives more of a range of issue fixes for installation troubleshooting.
trouble installing iTunes or quicklime for windows: ht1926
as well as this article.

Feb 26, 2013 3:31 PM in response to ziax13by AuntieT,I did try following the suggestions in this article but was unable to remove the following folder :
C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\
I am given a pop up message that states "You'll need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder"
Then "you need pemisson to perform this action" when i select continue. "you require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder"
When I go into the security setting for this folder and give full rights, it still won't let me delete this folder. Any suggestions?
Apart from this folder all the other programs and folders have been successfully deleted.
I hate itunes!!

Apr 1, 2013 2:21 PM in response to AuntieTby AuntieT,Thank you to everyone for your help. In the end I had to raise a fault directly with Microsoft. It turned out to be a compatibility issue, and I finally got the issue resolved - took some time though! Glad to say I have iTunes up & running, but not sure if I would be brave enough to upgrade to the next version when the time comes!!
