"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package ..." error messages when installing iTunes for Windows 7 64bit

I was promted to upgrade to the new itunes version today (11.0.2.26), but wish I never had as the previous version worked just fine!! I have been unable to install the new version and keep getting the message about there being a problem with the Windows Installer package. I tried following the instructions on this support pages on removing all Apple programs but that didn't work either!! I have Windows 7 64 bit and am close to throwing my PC out of the window!! Quicktime will not re-install correctly either...

Any suggestions will be most gratefully received 🙂

Doublechecking, Auntie. What's the second sentence of your particular error message? (Precise text, please.)

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in responding. The exact message I receive is:

"There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor"

As I stated in my first post, I followed the advice from the Apple support pages to remove all Apple programs in a specific order and then re-install. This did not work. Am now at my wits end as the last version of iTunes worked without any problems.

Any advice would be gratefully received 🙂

Just in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.

Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:

http://www.rarlab.com/

Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".

Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.

(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)

Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.)

I did try following the suggestions in this article but was unable to remove the following folder :

C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\

I am given a pop up message that states "You'll need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder"

Then "you need pemisson to perform this action" when i select continue. "you require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder"

When I go into the security setting for this folder and give full rights, it still won't let me delete this folder. Any suggestions?

Apart from this folder all the other programs and folders have been successfully deleted.

I hate itunes!!

Unfortunately it would not install. I extracted it using WinRAR as described but when I trined to install AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi I got the following message:

"There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

Getting desperate now..... 😟

I was finally able to delete the C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\ folder and re-started my PC. After trying to re-install ITunes again as per the article, I was given the same message:

"There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

😟

Hey Auntie,

Like you I was having tons of problems and getting so frustrated but I have found a FIX !!! :-)

Here is what I did;

I did a B Noir said above using winrar, the only difference is I deleted the "AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi" file then I double clicked the "iTunes" installer file in that folder and it worked !! FINALLY AFTER MONTHS !!! :-)

Hope it works for you too!

Thank you to everyone for your help. In the end I had to raise a fault directly with Microsoft. It turned out to be a compatibility issue, and I finally got the issue resolved - took some time though! Glad to say I have iTunes up & running, but not sure if I would be brave enough to upgrade to the next version when the time comes!!

Thanks gregproulx001! This suggestion was a lifesaver!

I was getting the same error message, "There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run."

I unpacked iTunesSetup.exe using WinRAR as b noir suggested, then deleted "AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi" as you suggested, then ran "iTunes.msi."

It worked like magic! I have no idea why it worked, but I'm thankful it did.
