Remote Desktop Vs. VNC - any pros/cons?

Forgive me for my ignorance, but I want to sort of the advantages of buying this.
I've been using 3 macs (2 g5 systems, 1 quicksilver) on one screen via a free program called Chicken of the VNC. I also use Microsoft Remote desktop to control 5 PC's from my mac screen - also a free program.
With a price tag of $300, is there something about ARD that makes it worth the hefty price? I'm not trying to kick up dirt, I'm genuinely curious. I'm wondering if I'm missing out on something.

thanks.

ARD does a number of things that can't be done by VNC, such as doing package installs and running reports on the client machines. These features are more useful to a network administrator than to the average home user.

Simply put, if you don't need more than simple screen control, stick with VNC.
