I cant restore my iPod

I downloaded iTunes onto my new laptop and before it would let me connect my iPod it said I had to update my iTunes but after I agreed to update the version of iTunes I recieved a message stating:

iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.

I then clicked on the Restore and Update button.

Then I recieved a messgae stating:

The iPod "ipod" cannot be restored at this time because the ipod software update server coud not be contacted or is tempoary unavailable.

My ipod will do nothing except show me a picture prompting me to connect my ipod to itunes.
