Cannot tether iPhone to macbook via USB

I am currently using a macbook white classic (A1181) running 10.5.8.

I have an iPhone 4 running 6.1

I am trying to tether my phone to my computer via USB, but it is not appearing in Network Preferences list. When I click the '+' symbol, there is no option to add an 'iPhone USB' interface.

My mobile provider does permit tethering and it is active.

This is supposed to be possible on 10.5.8 and I have the latest version of iTunes.

My phone does work via wi-fi, however downloads are not completing fully and I wish to see if there is any improvement if I connect it via USB.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
