My brand new ipod classic freezes when hooked up to my BMW

The ipod hooks up with the car through the apple usb cable. This worked fine with my Nano for 2 years - even though sometimes the car did not see the nano right away, but with the classic it freezes and shows a bmw logo in the window. Disconnection and restarting the ipod holding menu and home button is the only fix and doing this every 3-4th time when starting the car is a nuissance. BMW is less than helpful, but from various web postings I gather I am not alone with this problem. Really want to use the classic over the nano because I store my music in lossless format.
