iPhone 5 camera not working!

My iPhone 5 seems to have an issue with its camera, whereby upon starting the camera app, the camera goes as far as showing the shutter screen and sometimes a blank screen instead. None of the buttons on the screen are functional at that point except the gallery of course. Even the front facing camera isn't working. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to mend this problem. Yes, I know that it is best for me to go to the Apple service centre and sort it out but I'd prefer if there is any close-to-home quick-fix method anyone know of I can employ? Besides, I've been told that it takes about 14 working days for my phone to get checked and fixed. It's a bit too long for me with university around the corner. So any ideas?
