will a mid 2010 15" macbook pro not boot without the battery in it?

There were only one or two models that would boot without a battery, even a failed battery, present. The rest of the MBPs have to have a battery physically connected to the circuit to boot even if the battery is dead.

Ralph, would you mind providing some info on this please? During a similar discussion in another thread another user and I disagreed on if this was truly the case. I indicated that on the newer non-removable battery models that the battery had to be plugged in in order to complete the circuit and allow for the ac adapter to power it up. The other user was adamant that the previous routine (like on the older MBP with removable batteries) that this wasn't the case and you could remove the battery and still power up the system with the ac adapter alone. Would love to back this up via legit docs, but I can't find anything publicly available on it. Working on getting my hands on the diagnostic docs for MBPs, but in the meantime, any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

My 2010 MBP will function without the battery connected and attached to the power adapter. I suggest that you make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have your MBP examined.

My daughters '09 will not start at all with the battery removed, but did start on line-power with it in before I bought a new battery for it. So I would suggest getting a new battery. You can always follow OG's suggestion and have it checked first and get a little added comfort level that way.

I would first have the MBP checked at the genius bar. In addition, I would exercise great caution purchasing a battery from a third party. There have been too many tales of woe of bargain batteries bought from E-bay (or the like) which work for a month at best or not at all. There are times when the extra cost is actually the most economic alternative.

Here are the Apple costs for a replacement battery:

iFixit sells Apple batteries, but the last time I looked, they were out of stock.

Recently on another post, it showed Apple batteries available through Amazon at favorable prices that appeared to be OEM quality. I suspect that these are gray market batteries but they may very well be satisfactory. I still say 'Caveat Emptor'.

If you do choose to go the third party route, you will need a #0 Triwing driver to install the battery.
