Any ideas how to fix this? Its not on mute, but its a very faint muffled sound.

Restore iPhone via iTunes.
Set up as new user.
If this not solved. Bring it to an Genius Bar.
If you are not silent, the volume is all the way up, and other videos play at full volume (try a diferent app), then the only conclusion is that you just didn't record the video with a very strong mic.
I played a video on you tube and it sounded great. So maybe delete and reinstall the camera app? How can I increase volume when recording? Every time I put the volume up it snaps a picture. argh.
You can't delete the built-in camera app. All you can do is turn your volume up to the max when recording and try to stand closer to what you are recording. Hopefully this will solve your problem.
To make sure there is not a problem with your mic, record a 10 second video with you talking directly into the bottom of the iPhone. Play it and see how it sounds. If it is muffled, you will need to go to a genius bar to have mic repaired.
JacksonH98, this is definitely where the problem lies. But people can hear me fine when I am talking on the phone though.
So the microphone is functional, but the camera app is not recording right, even close noises?

Unfortunatly then there is nothing else which I can recommend. If the volume is all the way up when recording and it doesn't work, there must be a problem with the app.

whats weird is that older videos I have work ok.
You could try a soft reset. Hold the lock and home buttons until you see the apple logo appear. The phone will restart. No data will be lost.

nope. It appears to be something with the noise cancelling microphone. Crap!

Did you get this resolved? Mine is exactly the same!! Fine when on calls and when watching vids etc but when I take a video the sound is majorly muffled!!

I had the same problem this week. Filmed my daughter in a show but there was no sound when I played it back. I tried everything that has been posted on forums but still no sound.
Then I discovered why.
Have any of you got your iphone in a case?
Remove it if you have. Record a video. Play it back. Now can you hear the video?
The iphone case was covering the microphone.

Because you didn't have your iphone in a case when you recorded them. Try removing it and record something.
