Mac Book Pro's volume is grayed out, help?

My Mac Book Pro's volume isn't working, the other day I plugged in my ear phones and after I removed them my volume was grayed out and is no longer out-putting any volume unless I re-plug the earphones in. I am at a loss as what I should do. Is there any way to fix this problem...? I have shutdown/restarted my computer several times and it is still grayed out.

Disconnect everything from your USB ports, MDP/Thunderbolt and headphone socket etc. Go to System Preferences, then sound and make sure your Built In Audio is selected on the Output tab, leave that window open. Re-insert them one by one and see if new iotems are added to the list.

Output devices like HDMI (to play your Mac through a TV that you're using as the screen) are made in a way that your Mac is unable to control the Volume so it just greys out the Volume controls.

Look in the audio output port. If you see a red light, then the internal switch id stuck. Insert the phone jack a few times and see if that will trip the switch. If no success, try a cocktail stirrer or the like and jiggle it inside. If still no success, bring it to an Apple store.

If there is no red light, try a PRAM reset:

Ciao.

Thanks so much for your responses!

gen_ : I went to the system preferences and followed your directions but nothing changed the volume is still grayed out. 😟 Since it is a lap top I only have my charge cord plugged in. My internal speakers still won't out-put any volume and the sound button is still grayed out.

ogelthorpe: where does one find the audio output port?

Any more pointers....? The only way I can hear anything is by plugging my headphones back in.

If looking in the headphone jack you see no red light (stuck microswitch) as desribed above.

you can try this method

how to solve greyed out volume control

Open a terminal and copy and paste in :

sudo chown -R _coreaudiod:admin /Library/Preferences/Audio

This will fix permissions.

Then copy and paste in:

sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force

This will clear and rebuild dyld (dynamic loader cache)

And finish with copy and paste:

sudo killall coreaudiod

restarts the audio daemon.

System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers

Make sure Mute is not enabled.

Remove the headphone.

If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone

in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.

Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405

Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

Best.
