Q: Problem with the Finder when copying stuff on a server

Hi all !

I have a NAS at home and since a few days, copying stuff on its hard drive has become a pain.

The hard drives connected to the NAS mount well with no problem, and when I start copying a big file on them, The finder sort of freezes, becomes completely unresponsive.

The console gives me informations like these :

I have reformated the hard drive of the NAS, and its configuration is OK.

On the mac, I have tried everything : Zapping the PRAM, repair authorisations, except reinstall the system. That i really dont want to have to do at the moment.

So can anyone help with this ?

Best regards,

Phil.

OK I think I've started to find a solution to the problem, but only temporary because the problem comes back after a while.

I launched Onyx, and in the Maintenance tab > rebuild.

This solved the problem but I know it's going to be back in a while.

So if anyone knows what's going on, I'd appreciate...

    Regards

Edit. Sorry, seems like it didn't solve the problem at all. Same problem a minute after...

Edit 2. BTW, I'm connecting to the server by doing cmd-k with the IP of the server via SMB:// afp:// does the same.

I have created a new user to see if things changed. Seems like it was OK for a while, and then again, same problem occured.

here's what the console gives me over and over :

27/02/13 02:24:26,215 com.apple.qtkitserver[315]: Failed to get user access for mount /Volumes/Disque dur

    27/02/13 02:24:26,224 sandboxd[288]: ([315]) com.apple.qtkits(315) deny system-fsctl 0x7a13

    please help !

Seems like I'm doing this thread all by myself...

OK so it seems to me the problem is caused by one of the latest Apple updates.

I reformated the SSD of my retina MbP, reinstalled the systeme and did some tests between the updates.

A raw Mountain Lion doesnt have the problem.

    Updating to 10.8.2 neither.

Trouble appeared with the last batch of updates (MbP 2.0, Airport, and something else I cant remember).

So I guess this is in Apple's hands...

    Hi Philippe,

What protocol do you use to connect to your NAS?  Samba by chance?

    Regardless actually.

I have tried Samba (cmd-k - smb://192.168.0.1 (the adress of the NAS on my private network) or Appletalk (cmd-k - afp://192.168.0.1). I have tried via ftp through the finder as well, the volumes connected to the NAS show up, but in read only.

The NAS has an internal 250Gb HD, one 2Tb HD connected to a USB port, and another 2Tb HD connected to a sATA port.

The only way I have found to get flawlessly to the NAS is by using some dedicated FTP software like Cyberduck.

For what it's worth, I have seen the exact same issue connecting between two MAC Book Pro laptops.  In my case, I could re-create the problem every time I tried to delete more than a few files (think 10-15) on the remote system.  Beach-ball, a force-quit/restart of Finder resulted in an empty desktop -- all the icons were gone.  I could attempt other applications, but in most cases they would start and then just hang.

Only cure was a hard power-down and a restart.  Since this occured, I have done a re-installation of ML as I thought perhaps I had something corrupted in my environment.  I haven't yet gone back to attempting the same actions again, but this isn't just a Server/NAS issue since I got the behavior on two normal laptops and accessing a harddrive.

Note:  Whenever the process hung on my laptop, the other laptop gave no indication anything was wrong and all operations were normal.  Suspecting perhaps a low-level network communications problem.  Finally, I do have Parallels loaded, but it was inactive/closed when all these issues struck me.

The connection with my NAS is without problems (AFP)

Exact same situation going on here.

Connecting to a NAS (DroboFS).  Started happening a few weeks ago.  I'm looking at a 1.19gb copy right now over a hardwired ethernet connection.  8.4 megs copied so far in 45 minutes.

    os 10.8.4 Macbook Pro.

Have tried SMB, AFP, using IP address, aliases, etc.  No noticiable difference.

Used to be lighting fast, connection looks good, 1000T,... network speed tests look good, have looked at ip problems, everything looks good and nothing on my network changed.

Only message in the system logs of relevance to the copy are:

MacBook-Pro.local Locum[466]: Connection with distnoted server was invalidated

MacBook-Pro.local WebProcess[467]: objc[467]: Object 0x7f9ebbc1c6c0 of class NSUserDefaults autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug

I've been having this issue too. Doing CCC backups from drive on one mac to another. Works most of the time, but sometimes this happens. Usually a restart of source (same LAN) works.
