Mountain Lion's mac mail will not keep accounts on line. This is prevalent always when the application is running in background and not open to the screen or after the computer goes to sleep. Takes a long time to get the accounts back on-line to retrieve mail. This is a big big big pain to have to bird dog my mail.

If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.
