Q: Iphone 4, iOS 6.1.2, no VPN over Personal Hotspot

Hi guys,

- L2TP-VPN works perfect, when I'm connecting my MBP 2010 through my home wifi network to L2TP-VPN Server

- same VPN works perfect, using my iPhone 4 with iOS 6.1.2 through my phone-provider (congstar-d1-germany)

- same VPN fails, when tryin to connect from my MBP whilst connect to the internet via my iPhones personal hotspot, that means my iPhone is connected to my provider without vpn. i start the vpn on my MBP.

That's what I've done:

- Reset my iPhone to fabric new, configure it manually without backup

- start the ppp-logging (domains and ip is obsfuscated):

Mon Feb 25 22:59:21 2013 : L2TP connecting to server 'foo.bar.internetdomain.com' (1.234.5.678)...

Mon Feb 25 22:59:21 2013 : IPSec connection started

Mon Feb 25 22:59:21 2013 : IPSec phase 1 client started

Mon Feb 25 22:59:31 2013 : IPSec connection failed

Has anybody any idea, what's wrong?

The VPN Server is a Draytek 2820 Router behind a speedport II LTE-Router where Ports 1701, 1723 (PPTP), 500 and 4500 (IPSEC) are forwarded to the Draytek.

Thx in advance

some cellular providers you have to change APN settings to allow you to have either VPN or personal hotspot

some don't allow both and you have to swap APN settings depending on what your doing

you'll have to contact your cellular provider and discuss the issue with them

    Hi iToaster,

that's the problem. My Provider has no such setting which allows only one VPN or Tethering at the same time. I discuss this possibility with a technical consultant of my provider. he told me, that there may be a problem with the routing functionality of the iphone. a normal router traverses VPN traffic (VPN-Passthrough). iphone - especially mine - doesnt.

so i tried the same constellation with a sony xperia mini for 130€ with the same sim-card and what should i say: it works like charm.

so there must be a problem with my iphone or this is a general problem of any iPhone.

Is there someone with the same constellation (MBP - tethering to iphone 4 - VPN started at MBP) where it works?

I have a quite similar problem with my iPhone and VPN and Hotspot:

I am using a VPN Connection from my MacBook over the Internet to an AVM Fritzbox.

The MacBook was connected via WIFi-Personal Hotspot available by the iPhone with a Data-Plan.

The connection to my Home-Network via VPN was working fine, but I could not reach any Website on the Internet.

The moment I switched off the VPN I could reach the Internet.

Is this a Bug or did I miss any Option to make it possible to connect simultaniously to my HomeServer and the Internet?
