Formatting an External Harddrive to FAT

I have a backup of an old Macbook that is not formatted to FAT(32?) or whichever one it is that is able to be seen by both Mac and Windows.

My question is, can I format this harddrive to FAT without it deleting all of the files on it?

I don't have the files that are on it on any comptuer and I don't want to lose them, but I would like to not only be able to put the files on it on my Windows computer, but also be able to put files from my Windows computer on the hard drive.

Is that possible?

Thanks!

Formatting a drive will erase all the data on it. In addition, files you want to keep shouldn't be on only one drive, as it might fail at any time.
