ipod classic showing red cross, makes clicking noises when try to put it into Disk Mode

My ipod for some unexpected reason wiped all its content last night, now it won't let me restore via itunes. When I try to put into disk mode, it gets to the 'apple' screen but won't go any further and all the while makes clicking noises. Is the end nigh for my faithful, loyal five-year-old ipod?
