iphoto CONSTANTLY crashes - about 1x an hour

Hi all,

Without fail, everytime I use iPhoto it will crash about 1 time an hour. This has been happening since I got my laptop, about 6 mths ago. Over the course of the past 2 days, I think it crashed 8-9 times during about 8 hrs of photo editing. I'm not even doing anything "fancy"... I'm simply cropping, straightening, adjusting some colors, etc. I will be working on it, and it will simply just "crash" and quit. After a few moments it will give me a message saying something like: "iPhoto quit unexpectantly and do I want to submit a report to Apple." I have sent Apple all of these reports in the hopes that they'll fix this problem in future revisions (as well as a few choice comments!)

I've done all my due diligence in trying to fix this problem myself, and you're my last hope.

Sometimes after a crash, iPhoto will simply boot up as normal. Other times, it'll suggest that I either rebuilt or repair my library. I've repaired & rebuilt my library at least 4x over the course of all the crashes. In fact, I'm writing this email now as iPhoto is repairing my library due to yet another crash.

There's a few threads on this forum that have iPhoto issues and I've read them and have tried fixing it using your suggestions but no luck. Just yesterday I went thru the each of the "iPhoto Library First Aid" steps. I Repaired Permissions, then after that was done, Repaired Library, and finally Rebuilt Library. Sure enough that didn't fix it. It crashed again after working on it for an hour or so.

I've brought it to the Apple store 3x and the geniuses never seem to live up to their name. Once the "genius" told me iPhoto could only handle about 10K worth of pics (which I thought was a ridiculously low # - i verified thru this website that indeed that # is far too low). During those visits, all they've done is repair and rebuilt my library. They also uninstalled and reinstalled iPhoto. None of that worked.

I highly doubt it's a virus as I don't download anything on this laptop. I've only installed 4 programs all from verified sources (Apple and Microsft websites). As the laptop is pretty new, all the data I have on it is photos and MP3s I've transferred over from my previous laptop (which worked fine but was old).

I'm using a MacBook Pro on OSX 10.8.2 and iPhoto '11 9.4.2. I have about 9,500 photos.

Sorry if this is kind of long, but i wanted to make sure you have all the info necessary to diagnose my problem.

I know I should include the first 50 or so lines of my last crash report but I dont know how to get that info. Please help me! It really is driving me nuts, and ******* me off to no end.

Thanks!

iPhoto '11, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

haha... that's such an obvious way to get it. =) Thanks for the tip. It's so frustrating to constantly crashing that I didn't feel like doing anymore tonight but guess I'll get on it. I'm going to time it and see how long till it crashes. Thanks Larry and I'll post it when I get it.

Feb 25, 2013 11:13 PM in response to tri

Hi Larry, I timed how long it took from starting up iPhoto till the crash, and it was 23 min. I'm not sure if the crashes are happening more quickly or if I always just assumed it was about an hour (I think it's the latter). After the crash, when I restarted iPhoto, it did not suggest a repair or rebuild of the library.

Below is the report. I copied the whole thing but am only posting a portion of it. If you need the full report, let me know. Thanks for looking into this.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Hi Terence,

Thanks for the suggestion. I just got around to do it today. It took forever - like a few hours - but it's finally finished and I've rebuilt my library using the Library Manager. I haven't used iPhoto yet as I'm comparing the rebuilt library vs my original one.

It didn't copy over all my files. My rebuilt library is missing about 400 pics when compared to my original one. I have a few questions for you:

1. Why did Library Mgr not rebuild these pics? Was it simply a program error, or were these not rebuilt as they are the corrupt ones causing my iPhoto crashing issues?

Note that these are recently downloaded pics (from the past 2 wks) so I wouldn't think they are the 'corrupted' files since they're new. I've been having this iPhoto crashing issue since I got the Mac about 6 mths back. If anything, I would expect that any corrupted pics would be from the original batch I transferred over to the new Mac.

2. If these pics are not the corrupt ones, how do you suggest I bring them into my new library? Should I just rerun the whole library rebuild function again (getting another rebuilt library version 2), or can I choose only these specific pics and rebuild them into the current rebuilt library?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the info. I've just did what you suggested

  • Opened iPhoto using my original library
  • Exporting the missing photos onto my desktop
  • Opened iPhoto using the rebuilt library
  • Imported the missing pics into it.

Hopefully that will resolve my constant crashing issues. I'll keep you both updated.

Hi Larry, Terence,

Sadly after all your steps/suggestions, I'm still experiencing crashes. iPhoto has crashed 2-3x however the good news is that the time between crashes has increased. Where before it was about every 30 min or so, since creating the new library, it's now about 1-1.5 hrs. Obviously that's much better, but it's still a problem. Any thoughts as to what it can be?

I've attached the most recent crash report below. Note that when I restarted iPhoto, it gave me the "inconsistency w/ library error" and forced me to repair the library (which it's doing right now).

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

Hi Terence, thanks... I will do that tomorrow.

Since the library repair i spoke about in my previous post at 11:32pm above, it crashed once again. It took only 32 min to crash this time. I've posted the crash report below in case you can glean any info from it.

It's the same crash every single time.

Performing @selector(toggleInspectorSidebar) from sender IPKButton 0x79c5a560

Now we need to find out if it's a faulty install of the App, the OS or a third party issue.

Try run a library in another account, see what happens. If it crashes there, then we try reinstalling the app, if that fails we try reinstall the OS.

Hey Terence,

I haven't done your suggestions yet (i'll do it this weekend), but I wanted to point something out to you. It's crashed 2 more times, and both times I noticed that it didn't have that error you listed. Not sure if that means anything but thought I'd highlight it in case it helps you diagnose the issue more. Thanks again for all the help.

Now you seem to be having a problem with memory leaks. I'd install the most recent Mt. Lion update 10.8.3, it contains important bug fixes, and see if that improves the system stability.

Just crashed again, and it gave me another crash report... ugh. Thanks for the tip Leonie. I'll update the OS this weekend, then do the suggestions Terence suggested. Hopefully that will fix it. It's driving me nuts...
