Renaming bug - Aperture adding unwanted spaces

Aperture has started doing something strange...Seems only after the 1.1.1 update.

I always rename files on import, usually with a custom title and a sequence number or index number.

But, Aperture has started adding spaces between the custom name and the sequence/index number. And, the number of spaces it adds is growing!

It started off adding 1 space, then two and now three. I just imported 12 photos, and told it to name them "Moon_01", "Moon_02" etc etc. But, it has named them "Moon_ 01" "Moon_ 02" etc etc. I can't get rid of the spaces unless I do it manually for each file. This is a real pain, as spaces and URLs don't play well together, so I can't export the files with the version names because it stuffs up the URLs when they get onto a website. When I look at the naming format under the "edit" option of the rename function, there are no spaces. It doesn't matter if I rename on import or batch-rename later, it always adds the spaces.

Has anyone else come across this, and maybe have a solution?

you have probably inadvertently added a space either in the Custom field or in the Counter field or between them.

when you created the file naming preset, I logically assume that you did it this way:

1. opened File Naming presets.
2. clicked the + button.
3. turned on Custom Name probably leaving it blank.
4. turned on Counter and setting the # of digits to 2.

you either then filled in Custom Name, or closed the preset dialog and filled the Custom Name during import.

when you turned on the Counter, Aperture automatically inserted a space between Custom Name and Counter. make sure that you delete it in the Preset dialog.

if you knew all of this, I apologise.

Well, DUH! I'm getting fairly proficient in an Aperture based workflow, and I too was bothered by the space between Custom Name and Counter. Never occurred to me that I could delete that space in the Preset dialogue. Thanks for the tip -- no need to apologize for posting useful advice.

That explains why you had spaces but doesn't explain why they were "growing" from use to use. Were you resetting the counter or changing the custom name field between uses?

The extra space also got me once or twice. It seems like a user interaction issue that is confusing many users. I suggest you report your experience to Apple. They may want to change the programs behavior of separating fields by an automatic space.
