Can I access the iCloud on my Mac via an iPad?

Hi, I am considering buying an ipad mini as I am going away for a fairly long time (Holiday not prison). Just come back from the shop empty handed as the salesman told me I cannot upload stuff to the iCloud I have on my Mac from the iPad but must have another iCloud account. He says I can access the suff I have but cannot change it or upload anything to that iCloud. Is this correct? Seems a bit weird to me after all what is the point of the Cloud if not for universal access.

Just what do you want to access via iCloud?

You can update/add Keynote, Pages and Numbers documents to iCloud from a Mac. If the Mac has Mountain lion and those apps (as well as the iPd having them) thay ae synce via iCloud.

Thanks for the super quick reply. I would like to be able to retrieve documents, edit them, retrieve pictures, and forward them. I have Mountain lion and Icloud which is where I store my documents at the moment. I really did not understand what the salesman meant when he said I could not add to my stuff on the iCloud I already use.

You can use iCloud with the same Apple ID on your iPad and access iCloud documents created on your Mac

OK Jim, I am a bear of very little brain. Can I just clarify this.

A. I have a document on iCloud which I create at home

B. I want to edit that document via my iPad.

C. I want the edited version to be av ailable on my IMac at home.

Can i do that

As long as you save the document to iCloud on the Mac,you can edit it via the iPad. iCloud syncs the copy on the iPad to the copy in iCloud

Yes, you can do that. Turn ON iCloud for the appropriate Apps in Settings, e.g., Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc.

Ok Jim but now I'm puzzled again. I turn on iCloud for mail and it asks me for an email address e.g. xxxxxx.@icloud.

How does this affect the email address I am already using, will I have to send out a change of email address notice to all my contacts?

You do not have to use the iCloud email address if you do not want to. If you want to you have to tell people of the email address.

OK, but if I continue to use my present email address will my emails go to the iCloud or not? Sorry to be a pain the proverbial but this whole Cloud concept escapes me somewhat.

Not unless you configure your present email account to automatically forward mail to your icloud account.

I expect you have anticipated my next problem. How do i configure the account to do this. By now all readers will be thinking "What is this Dodo doing owning a computer anyway". Sorry guys but it's just like my car, if it goes when I turn the key fine, if not, go and see the man.

Typically you go to your email account via webmail and go to preferences/setting. there should be an option for email forwarding.

You can also Google for:

setup XX email for email forwarding

where XX is your email provider.
