Photos show up sideways went sent via email

I've heard of this before, and did my own test:

This does not appear to be a problem when opened with another apple mobile device. Just when opened on computer via webmail. (gmail.com)

Photos appeared fine when opened within my apple mail application on my macbook pro.

This comes down to the camera orientation when the picture was taken.

Basically the way to take photos, and have them be correctly oriented is by holding the iPad in Landscape mode when taking the picture.

This is the "correct" upright orientation.

If you take the picture with the iPad in Portrait mode, standing upright, then you get a picture that is technically sideways, bnecause you've phisically rotated the camera. However as explained in the above links, iDevices embed an instruction into the picture that most applications understand and can act on thereby rotating the pic to its proper position.

Web Mail services, and some web clients (Thunderbird did this to me) ignore the instruction, and so display the picture as it was taken. So it looks sideways.

Its very easy to remedy this in any image editor.
