How do you unlock the volume control on a macbook pro? Looked for coreadiod under Activity Monitor but not listed. Other ideas.

Thanks. But resetting the PRAM didn't help unfortunately.
Since I don't have a clue what you mean by it's locked, check System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects. At the bottom, is the output volume muted (check box to the right)?
Is there a red light shining out of the headphone jack? If so, the digital switch in there is stuck. Try plugging and unplugging headphones a few times. If that doesn't fix it, try poking in there with a toothpick to reset the switch.
What worked for me: open up a Terminal window and:
sudo killall coreaudiodcannot unlock volume controls to adjust on macbook pro with osx10.6.8. Checked Activity Monitor but no coreaudiod to Force Quit. Other suggestions?
