How do I delete an old network connection?

I just installed Airport Extreme and went through the set-up process and created a secure network. However, the old "linksys" network is still on the wi-fi drop-down list and the computer automatically connects to this network, which is unsecured. I have tried all the methods and suggextions on the net for deleting the "linksys" network but none of them have worked.

Any tips, suggestions, etc how I can eliminate "linksys?"

On your Mac.......

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

Open Network

Click on WiFi on the left

Click Advanced at the lower right

Here you will see the connection order list for your Mac

Make sure that your preferred network is at the top of the list. If it is not, drag it there.

Click OK at the lower right of the window then click Apply and close the windows

Restart the Mac to see if it will connect to your preferred network now.

See if the name of the network appears in KeyChain Access.

Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access

Look for the name of the wireless network. If it is there, click on the name to highlight it, then click the Delete key.

But, if the Linksys router is still broadcasting a signal with no security.....anyone with a computer in range will be able to connect to the device. If the Linksys is tied into your network, anyone will be able to access your network.

That is the strange part. I had gone to Keychain Access yesterday and linksys was not there. I did a search of all files and there was no linksys. The linksys router is no longer attached -- it's gone. But "linksys" still appears on the WiFi drop-down and I can connect to the net through it.

I appreciate your effort and suggestions. The problem is puzzling, to say the least.

That was my first thought. However, since my Mac was automatically connecting to linksys and when I went to the ip address for linksys and entered my name and admin it recognized it. So, I continued to assume it was my router. I do hope you are correct. There doesn't seem to be any other logical explanation.

Again, I appreciate the time and effort you've devoted to this.
