Time Machine backing itself up?

Am running OS X 10.8.2, and don't recall seeing this before under Leopard or Lion:

I had entered time machine, and was purusing my Time Machine backups, when I noticed that one of the devices in Time Machine's "finder window" was "Time Machine Backups". Clicking on this device shows me Backups.backupsdb, and clicking on that shows me the past backups that have been done...

I don't have any devices or folders excluded from being backed up...

Should the device "Time Machine Backups" normally be found here, or should it be excluded from being backed up?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Your TM disk should be in Exclusions in Time Machine Preferences.

"Are you unable to add it to the exlusion list, or does it just not exclude it?"

I'm unable to add it to the exclusion list...

On a different Mtn Lion computer, the Time Machines Backup *is* on the exclusion list, but the Time Machine Backup still shows up under devices, when Time Machine is entered.

On both computers, however, the "Time Machine Backups" device does not appear to have backups associated with it (there is only one "date" found for this device, and it is "now"...I can't go back in "time" and view any earlier backups).

"The only thing in TM volume should be backups.backupdb > machine name > dated folders."

This is, indeed the case...

If you're unable to add your TM disk to the exclusion list, then something is wrong. I'm a bit confused about "Devices". Your TM disk should always be there under devices but that's not the way to access it. If when you enter TM inferface you can't find more than "now" again something is wrong.

Take a llok here atPondini's Troubleshooting Time Machine guideand see if you can find anything related to your issue.

Sorry for the confusion....

The Time Machine Backups disk shows in in the left finder column under devices (both in the finder, and once I've entered Time Machine):

User uploaded file

I've got the finder preferences set to show external drives in the left column...Even so, I was surprised to see the Time Machine Backups show up as an apparent time machine backup...

I don't try to access TM via the Time Machine Backups Disk in the finder. Also, every file shows up correctly when I enter the TM, with the appropriate number of backups. Humm... Just checked the Time Machine Disk when in TM, and it INDEED does show up as having backups of itself...

I didn't think I had any issues, other than being unable to exclude the Time Machine disk, until just before I began this reply... I noticed that I had a TM backup going on a bit longer than normal, so I checked the TM preferences pane, and discovered that the backup that was occurring was gradually increasing with size as the backup went on... It should have been only a few Kb at most. However, it was at 20GB and climbing when I turned off the backup...

I'll re-look at Pondini's TM Guide to see if I can find any clues/fixes.

Thanks,

Bob

So...Pondini's Time Machine Troubleshooting guide, A4, has a note:

"If you're backing-up to an external HD, it's shown automatically, in gray, and you can't remove it..."

This is the case when I'm backing up my MacBook Pro to an external USB HD... Have tried Pondini's full reset of TM, and I still can't get TM to automatically exclude my iMac's TM Backup...

Will keep experimenting...

macjack,

Ref local snapshots: Are you seeing something on the screen capture that prompted you to bring up MBP local snapshots? The above screenshot is from an iMac...

I've see the local snapshots on my MBP via the terminal... (I presume you're referring to the sleepimage?) I've never seen on on my iMac... (using Terminal and the command ls -la /private/var/vm...

I've never done a restore of my iMac using files from the MBP...
